What Mac do I need?
OurNook runs on macOS 13 Ventura or later, on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Performance depends on your Ollama model — smaller models like qwen3:14b run well on any recent Mac; larger models benefit from more RAM and Apple Silicon.
Do I need Ollama installed?
Yes — Ollama runs the AI models locally. It's free and takes about two minutes to set up. OurNook auto-detects your Ollama installation and connects to it automatically.
Which models does it support?
Any model available on Ollama. The default is qwen3:14b, which offers an excellent balance of speed and capability for everyday use. You can switch models at any time — try llama3.3, deepseek-r1, or anything else you've pulled.
Is my data safe?
Completely. OurNook never sends your conversations anywhere. All processing happens on your Mac via Ollama. Your companion's memory is stored in plain files in your local app support directory — you can read, edit, or delete it anytime.
Is this a subscription?
No. Pay once, own it forever. No subscription, no microtransactions, no "pro" meter. All features are included from day one and future updates are free.
How does payment work?
Click a tier above. It opens your Monzo app (or monzo.com in a browser) with the amount and a note prefilled. Confirm and the money goes straight to me — no middlemen. After you pay, the same page shows you the download link. You'll need a Monzo account to pay, or any UK bank via the Monzo.me link.
How is this different from ChatGPT or Claude?
Those are cloud services — your data goes to their servers. OurNook is entirely local. Your companion has memory that persists across sessions and belongs to you. There's no rate limiting, no subscription, and no risk of your data being used for training.
Can I use my own voice?
Kokoro TTS supports a range of voice profiles. You can select from different voice presets in settings. Whisper handles transcription in any language you speak.
