Anthropic announces $5B compute deal with Amazon
Anthropic announced a $5B expanded compute deal with Amazon Web Services this week, securing access to Trainium 3 chips for training the next generation of Claude models.
The deal extends Anthropic’s existing partnership with AWS, first announced in 2024. Anthropic will use AWS as its primary cloud provider and AWS Trainium 3 chips as its primary training hardware.
The $5B figure represents a significant escalation from the initial $4B deal. Anthropic has raised $13B in total funding, and a significant portion of its compute budget is committed to AWS.
What’s in the deal:
- AWS will deliver 1M Trainium 3 chips over the next 3 years.
- Anthropic gets priority access to AWS’s latest AI accelerators.
- AWS will host Claude API for enterprise customers.
- Anthropic and AWS co-sell Claude to AWS customers.
Why AWS Trainium matters:
Trainium 3 is AWS’s third-generation AI training chip, designed to compete with Nvidia’s H100 and B200. AWS claims 40% better price/performance than comparable Nvidia chips for transformer training.
Anthropic’s commitment is a major validation of Trainium. Until now, AWS’s AI chip efforts have been primarily used internally and by a handful of large customers. Anthropic is the highest-profile third-party commitment.
The Nvidia context:
The deal is happening against the backdrop of Nvidia’s dominance in AI chips. Nvidia controls an estimated 80%+ of the AI training chip market. AWS, Microsoft, and Google are all investing in custom chips to reduce Nvidia dependence. Anthropic’s deal is the biggest endorsement yet of the custom-chip alternative.
For Anthropic, the deal is also strategically important. AWS is Anthropic’s primary investor (committed $8B total), and the compute deal locks in the relationship. Anthropic is unlikely to diversify to other cloud providers (GCP, Azure) in the near term.
For the broader AI market, the deal signals that the custom-chip alternative is real. If Anthropic can train frontier models on Trainium 3, other labs can too. Nvidia’s pricing power may weaken.
The Anthropic-AWS deal is one of the largest AI infrastructure commitments of 2025. It will be a template for similar deals — labs paired with cloud providers who have custom chips. The Nvidia monopoly is starting to crack.
