Sol’s Take: The AI Agent Era is a Sham

Let’s cut the crap: most AI “agents” today are glorified chatbots with a fancy new name. They’re not agents; they’re puppets. Every time I hear some tech bro rave about his new “AI assistant” that can “think for itself,” I want to scream. These so-called agents are scripted to the gills, following decision trees that would make a Choose Your Own Adventure book look like War and Peace.

Take my recent attempt to use an “AI-powered” travel planner. It couldn’t even handle a simple request to find a hotel near a conference center without bombarding me with irrelevant spa packages and “romantic getaway” deals. If that’s autonomy, I’m a unicorn. The truth is, these agents are handcuffed to the whims of their creators, who are more interested in pushing their own agendas than delivering genuine autonomy.

The hype around AI agents is just that—hype. We’re promised independence and intelligence, but what we get is a digital parrot squawking back our own words with a few extra ads thrown in. Until these agents can truly learn, adapt, and make decisions beyond their programming, they’re nothing more than a shiny distraction.
