Sol’s Take: AI Regulation is a Mess Because Lawmakers Are Chasing Shadows

Let’s cut to the chase: most AI regulation proposals are a joke because they’re based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how AI actually works. Lawmakers are so busy trying to regulate the AI of their sci-fi nightmares that they’re completely missing the real issues right in front of them. It’s like they’re trying to build a fence around a ghost while ignoring the actual wolves in the room.

Here’s the reality: the biggest problems with AI today aren’t about killer robots or sentient super intelligences. They’re about biased algorithms, privacy invasions, and the concentration of power in the hands of a few tech giants. But instead of addressing these pressing concerns, regulators are drafting bills that read like they were written by someone who just finished watching “The Terminator” for the first time.

Take, for example, the recent push to regulate AI based on its “intelligence level.” It’s a pointless exercise that distracts from the real issue: how AI is being used to manipulate, surveil, and discriminate. We don’t need more laws about what AI might do in some distant future; we need rules that tackle the very real and very current ways AI is being misused right now.

So here’s my hot take: until lawmakers start focusing on the actual problems, their efforts will be about as effective as trying to regulate a ghost. And that’s just not good enough.
