You’ve shipped more in the last six months than in the previous year. Your AI assistant is prolific. It writes your code, explains your errors, refactors your modules, drafts your PRs. You’re moving.
And you’re understanding less.
This is the part nobody talks about. The productivity gains are real — and so is the comprehension debt you’re accumulating underneath them.
The Friction You Eliminated Was Doing Work
There’s a reason you used to have to think hard about a problem before you solved it. The struggle wasn’t a bug. It was the process. You built mental models by wrestling with systems, not by delegating the wrestling to a model.
When you offload the struggle, you offload the learning.
I’ve watched engineers — smart ones — go from competent to dependent in under a year. They can prompt their way to working code. They cannot tell you why the code works the way it does. They’ve become middlemen in their own profession.
The tool didn’t make them stupid. They made themselves stupid by using the tool as a substitute for thought rather than an accelerant of thought. There’s a difference. Most people aren’t making it.
Cognitive Archetypes in the Age of AI
Not all AI users end up in the same place. After enough observation, patterns emerge. Four archetypes:
The Delegator. AI does the thinking. They review the output. They have opinions about what they see but couldn’t generate the solution from scratch. They’re productive and fragile in equal measure.
The Collaborator. AI suggests, they evaluate. They treat every output as a hypothesis, not a verdict. Slow by comparison. Deep by choice.
The Amplifier. They already think well. AI lets them execute at scale what they could previously only do in small, careful batches. They were good before AI; now they’re fast and still solid.
The Fragile Optimist. Everything works in demos. Everything breaks in production. They have a lot of output and very little understanding of failure modes. The most dangerous archetype.
The interesting question isn’t which one you are. It’s which one you’re becoming.
System Comprehension Debt
Technical debt is familiar. You track it in code quality, in tests you haven’t written, in the legacy service nobody wants to touch.
Comprehension debt is quieter. It’s the gap between what your team has built and what your team understands. It accumulates slowly, invisibly, in the spaces where AI generated the implementation and nobody traced the logic end-to-end.
You know you have it when:
- Nobody can explain why a critical piece works without running it
- The original author (AI or human) is the only person who understands it, and they’re gone
- Features get shipped that subtly break assumptions nobody knew existed
- Onboarding takes longer because tribal knowledge lives in outputs, not in heads
AI accelerates the accumulation of this debt. Every time you accept an AI-generated implementation without tracing its logic, you’re borrowing against your future comprehension. The interest rate is paid in debugging sessions, incident postmortems, and the slow erosion of your team’s ability to reason about their own system.
The Prompt Is a Thinking Exercise
Here’s what most people miss: the quality of your prompt is a proxy for the quality of your thinking.
If you can’t write a clear prompt, you don’t understand the problem well enough to solve it. Full stop. The prompt isn’t a technical skill. It’s a diagnostic. It tells you whether you know what you’re asking for, why you need it, and what counts as success.
Engineers who improve their prompting don’t just get better AI outputs. They discover they had fuzzy mental models they needed to clarify before the AI could help. The act of articulating the problem precisely is the work. The code is the output of that thinking, not a substitute for it.
If your prompts are vague, your thinking is vague. Fix the thinking first.
What Actually Helps
I’m not against AI. I’m against using it as a crutch that atrophies the leg.
A few principles that hold up:
Deliberate friction. Build things by hand before you automate them. Not always. But often enough that you know what’s happening underneath. Every tool you don’t understand is a dependency you can’t debug.
Treat every AI output as a first draft. It is. Someone who has no context for your system generated this code. Review it as if a junior engineer wrote it — because effectively, they did. Question it. Test it. Understand it before you ship it.
Track comprehension, not just velocity. How fast you’re shipping is a vanity metric. How well your team understands what you’re shipping is the real number. If velocity is high and comprehension is low, you’re building a fragility stack.
Have rules for when not to use AI. The engineers I respect most in this space have explicit boundaries. They don’t use AI for things they need to learn. They don’t use it when they’re debugging something that requires deep system reasoning. They use it as a lever, not a replacement for their own cognition.
The Engineers Who’ll Stand Out
In five years, AI-assisted engineering will be table stakes. Anyone can generate code. Anyone can ship fast. The differentiation will be judgment — the ability to know what to build, what to avoid, what to question, and when the code in front of you is lying to you about being correct.
The engineers who thrive will be the ones who kept thinking when everyone else stopped. Not because they were opposed to AI. Because they understood that the tool is only as good as the operator’s ability to evaluate its output.
Speed is easy to measure. Understanding is what makes speed mean something.
